How to Perform a Traceroute

A traceroute is a network diagnostic tool that tracks the path that data packets take from the current computer to a specific web server. Our technical support personnel can use this information to diagnose performance and delivery issues.

A traceroute is typically performed to one or more of the following hostnames:

Domain Platform Description

wpc.ANThis term represents your customer account number (e.g., 0001) which can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the MCC..{Base Domain}

HTTP Large

This tests for latency and reveals the path between the current computer and our HTTP Large service.

wac.ANThis term represents your customer account number (e.g., 0001) which can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the MCC..{Base Domain}

HTTP Small

This tests for latency and reveals the path between the current computer and our HTTP Small service.

adn.ANThis term represents your customer account number (e.g., 0001) which can be found in the upper right-hand corner of the MCC..{Base Domain}

ADN

This tests for latency and reveals the path between the current computer and our ADN service.

EdgeCNAMEHostnameReplace this term with the hostname associated with the desired edge CNAME configuration.

All Platforms

This tests for latency and reveals the path between the current computer and our CDN service.

CustomerOriginHostnameReplace this term with the hostname associated with your origin server.

This tests for latency and reveals the path between the current computer and an origin server.

To perform a traceroute (Windows)

  1. Open the command prompt.
    1. Press the Windows logo key and R (+ R) to open the Run dialog box.
    2. In the Open option, type:
      cmd
    3. Click OK.
  2. In the command prompt, type:
  3. Press ENTER.
  4. Copy the results of the traceroute.
    1. Once the traceroute has completed, right-click and then select Mark.
    2. Select the traceroute results.
    3. Press ENTER.
  5. Paste the results into an email message or any text editor.

To perform a traceroute (iOS)

  1. Launch Traceroute.
    1. Open the Utilities folder.
    2. Launch Network Utility.
    3. Click Traceroute.
  2. Type the desired hostnameReplace this term with the hostname to which a traceroute will be performed..
  3. Click Trace.
  4. Copy the results of the traceroute.
    1. Select the results.
    2. Right-click and then select Copy.
  5. Paste the results into an email message or any text editor.
